Mower Won’t Start: Troubleshooting Guide

A mower that will not start usually comes down to fuel, air, spark, compression or a safety/interlock condition. Work through the simple checks before replacing parts.

1. Check the basics

Confirm fresh fuel is in the tank, the fuel shutoff is open if equipped, the parking brake and operator-presence controls are in the required positions, and the blade/PTO control is disengaged.

2. Inspect the air filter

A severely restricted air filter can cause hard starting, poor running and rich operation. Inspect the filter and replace it if it is damaged, oil-soaked or excessively dirty.

3. Check the spark plug

Remove and inspect the plug according to the engine manufacturer’s procedure. Heavy deposits, damage or an incorrect gap can contribute to starting problems. Use the exact plug specified for your engine model.

4. Check fuel delivery

Old fuel, a clogged filter, restricted line, failing pulse pump or dirty carburetor can prevent the engine from receiving the correct fuel mixture. Inspect for leaks and restrictions before replacing components.

5. Carburetor symptoms

If fresh fuel, air and ignition checks are satisfactory but the engine still will not start or only runs briefly, the carburetor may need cleaning, adjustment or replacement. Always match the engine model and OEM carburetor number.

Prevent storage-related starting problems

If the mower will sit for an extended period, follow the engine manufacturer's fuel-storage procedure rather than leaving an existing fuel problem for spring. Use the End-of-Season Mower Maintenance & Winterization Checklist before long-term storage.

When to stop troubleshooting

If you suspect internal engine damage, compression loss, ignition-system faults requiring specialized testing, or an electrical safety-interlock problem you cannot identify confidently, use the manufacturer service information or a qualified technician.
