A worn spindle can cause rumbling, blade wobble, uneven cutting, repeated belt trouble, or severe vibration when the blades engage. Those symptoms can also come from a bent blade, damaged pulley, loose hardware, or deck damage, so inspect before replacing.
Common signs of a bad spindle
- Grinding, growling, or rumbling from one blade station
- Side-to-side play at the blade or pulley
- A pulley that wobbles while rotating
- Uneven blade height that cannot be corrected normally
- Repeated belt derailment near one spindle
- Heat, discoloration, or roughness at the bearing area
- Vibration that begins only when the deck is engaged
Safe inspection sequence
Park on a firm surface, remove the key, disconnect spark-plug leads, isolate battery power where applicable, and prevent accidental blade movement according to the mower manual. Never reach under a deck that is unsupported.
- Inspect blades for bends, impact damage, cracks, and loose mounting hardware.
- Check the deck shell and spindle mounting area for cracks or deformation.
- Remove belt tension only as the service procedure directs.
- Rotate each spindle by hand and compare feel and sound.
- Check for axial and radial play without using excessive force.
- Inspect the pulley, key, splines, and fastener.
Spindle versus blade symptoms
A bent blade often creates a repeating vibration and uneven tip height. A failed bearing is more likely to feel rough or loose and may make noise even without a blade installed. Both can exist after a hard impact.
