Deck-belt replacement varies by mower, but the same preparation and verification steps apply to most riding mowers and zero-turns.
Before buying a belt
Record the mower model number, deck size and OEM belt number. Do not rely on deck width alone; different models with the same deck width can use different belts.
General replacement process
- Park on a level surface, shut the engine off, remove the key and follow the manufacturer’s procedures to prevent accidental starting.
- Lower or remove the mower deck if the manufacturer’s procedure requires it.
- Photograph or note the existing belt routing before removal.
- Release belt tension according to the mower instructions.
- Remove the old belt and inspect pulleys, belt keepers, tension springs and spindles.
- Route the replacement belt exactly as shown by the mower’s routing decal or manufacturer diagram.
- Restore tension and verify the belt is seated fully in every pulley groove.
- Reassemble guards/deck components before operation.
Do not skip the pulley inspection
A new belt can fail quickly if a pulley is seized, misaligned or damaged. If the previous belt came off repeatedly, diagnose the cause before operating the mower.
